about me

My name is Isaac Hurst, I live in SE Portland. I design and build modern Scandinavian furniture under the name Modern Ethic. You can read more about me on my furniture site here.

From a design perspective, I generally lean toward modernist design. I have wide appreciation for well executed design of all tastes however and love anything that's fresh and different. This collection of writing is a side project that's solely for the joy of design and appreciation of interior spaces in the coffee shops I frequent so often. I spend so much time in coffee shops while doing paperwork or spending design time that I decided to start writing up thoughts on each.

While this site is a collection of reviews, the goal isn't to burn places for design missteps. I know the work that goes into building something, and I want to above all appreciate the places that creative people have made. I don't take pictures during my visit because many photos have already been taken by many other visitors and are freely available on google and yelp. I link to the them and to the website after each writeup.
